Hal Jespersen’s Wikipedia Civil War Maps
These are maps I created for Wikipedia American Civil War battle articles. Many are in the public domain—these are marked "PD" in the License columns below. If you use them, I would appreciate a footnote crediting me. I have started to use a new license for more recently created or updated files, the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license, which means that if you use them, you must abide by the terms of that license and attribute the image to "Map by Hal Jespersen, www.posix.com/CW". These files are marked "CC3" in the License column.
The source files listed as "FH11" were created with Macromedia Freehand. These files can be opened in Adobe Illustrator CS3 (although not earlier versions) and perhaps other vector graphic editing programs. As of August 2007, I have switched over to Adobe Illustrator CS3; files in this format are listed as "AI." At the same time, I have started date stamping new or corrected maps in the Recent Update column. I have chosen not to publish these maps in Adobe's SVG format because I find that there are (relatively minor) font problems with the resulting files. If this situation changes someday, I'll start using SVGs.
An all-around excellent source for other Civil War maps is the West Point Atlas by Col. Vincent Esposito. It was from those maps that I derived my style of simple topographic representation.
For Photoshop images I have created, see below.

Photoshop Images
I occasionally create composite images of Civil War photographs for Wikipedia articles. The table below has the Photoshop PSD files. In these portraits, the figure(s) and background are in separate layers. (some of these PSD files are pretty large.)
