POSIX Software Group is a consulting firm that provides leadership for software architectural and standards projects. Building on years of industry experience, we can assemble the team to design and implement complex software infrastructures. All projects are performed using the latest software standards and development practices. Based on our heritage of creating industry standards such as POSIX, we specialize in developing systems based on standards, or creating systems that will form the bases of future standards.

Hal Jespersen is the founder and principal of the POSIX Software Group. His 40+ years of industry experience include enterprise IT technology, architecture, collaboration, and standards development, both internal and external. He was a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems, most recently architecting compute-grid technology for “Software as a Service.” Hal was a leader of the “Sun on Wall Street” initiative, increasing Sun’s mindshare with the technology-leading firms in the capital equities markets. He also served as CTO of iPlanet (Sun/Netscape Alliance), providing architectural direction for enterprise-class Java servers, Web services, directory, systems management, and security, and leading technology acquisitions, partnerships, and standards.

Prior to joining Sun, Hal founded the POSIX Software Group to provide leadership in open systems standardization efforts. He was the Technical Editor for the IEEE/ISO POSIX family of standards and the Chair of the POSIX Shell and Utilities working group, He wrote standards for the Open Group; developed binary compatibility standards for Motorola and 88open; created the Common Desktop Environment standard. Earlier, Hal held positions including Director of R&D for UniSoft Corp., Manager of OS Development for Amdahl Corp., IT manager for Bechtel Power Corp., and a U.S. Army Signal Corps officer. Hal holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University and an MS in Systems Management from USC.
